Nike patents jackets with inflatable air pockets for extra warmth

Nike has filed a patent for clothing that includes small, sealed air pockets made from flexible plastic layers. These pockets can be inflated to create dome shapes that lift the fabric slightly off the body, trapping warm air to provide extra insulation.

Why it mattersThis design could make winter jackets lighter and warmer by using trapped air instead of heavy padding, offering a new way to stay comfortable in cold weather.

In the filing’s own words

Garment components include one or more fluid-filled bladder chambers. The bladder chamber(s) may be convertible between a deflated condition and an inflated condition. In at least some examples of this technology, garments and garment components may include features that enable formation of dome structures (e.g., thermoformed domes) at one or more garment surfaces. Such dome structures can help hold at least some portions of the garments and garment components off the wearer’s body, improve the comfort and/or feel (e.g., against the wearer’s body), improve breathability, and/or provide an additional volume of insulation.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A garment component, comprising: a first laminate structure including: (i) a first fabric having a first inner face and a first outer face, and (ii) a first film including at least one fluid impervious layer chosen from a polyurethane layer and a thermoplastic polyurethane layer, wherein the first film is adhesively bonded to the first inner face of the first fabric; a fluid impervious component including a sheet component having a thermoformed structure, the sheet component including an exterior surface and an interior surface located opposite the exterior surface, wherein the fluid impervious component is fixed with respect to the first film at a seam so as to form a fluid impervious chamber between the first film and the interior surface, wherein the thermoformed structure of the sheet component includes one or more thermoformed dome components extending outward from a base level of the sheet component; and a fabric member located between the first film and the interior surface, wherein the fabric member includes a first surface facing the first film and a second surface facing the interior surface, wherein the second surface is bonded to the interior surface of the sheet component at the base level and unbonded to the sheet component at the one or more thermoformed dome components.
