Apple patents radio trick to wake phones using multiple frequencies

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Apple has filed a patent for a method that helps phones detect wake-up signals by splitting the message across different frequency segments. This approach allows the device to listen for parts of the signal in separate frequency bands to improve reliability. Once the phone detects these specific signal components, it activates other parts of the hardware to receive the full message.

Why it mattersThis technique could help phones save battery by waking up more reliably without constantly listening to the entire radio spectrum.

In the filing’s own words

Systems, methods, processors, and circuitries are provided for supporting frequency diversity in wake-up signals. In one example, a method for a user equipment includes receiving a wake-up signal (WUS) carrying multiple encoded bits based on one or more information bits of a wake-up message. The WUS comprises a plurality of signal components, each signal component carrying one or more encoded bits. At least two of the plurality of signal components are received in different frequency segments comprising different sets of frequency resources. In response to the WUS, one or more components of the UE are configured to receive subsequent signals.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A user equipment (UE), comprising a baseband processor and a memory, the baseband processor configured to, when executing instructions stored in the memory, cause the UE to: receive a wake-up signal (WUS) carrying multiple encoded bits based on one or more information bits of a wake-up message, the WUS comprising a plurality of signal components, each signal component carrying one or more encoded bits, wherein at least two of the plurality of signal components are received in different frequency segments comprising different sets of frequency resources; and in response to the WUS, configure one or more components of the UE to receive a subsequent signal.
