Google patents method to tell phones when to save battery after data download

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Google describes a way for cell towers to signal phones that a burst of data has finished downloading. This allows the phone to switch into a low-power mode immediately instead of waiting for a timeout.

Why it mattersThis could help smartphones and other devices conserve battery life by reducing the time they spend actively listening for data when they are idle.

In the filing’s own words

A method ( 1800) communicating downlink data packets between a core network (CN) and a user equipment (UE) is implemented in the RAN. The method comprises communicating ( 1802), between the CN and the UE, the data packets; receiving ( 1856), from the CN, an indication of an end of a data burst that includes the data packets; and transmitting, ( 1890) to the UE and in response to the receiving of the indication, a command related to a power saving mode.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A method for communicating downlink, DL, data packets between a core network, CN ( 110), and a user equipment, UE ( 102), the method implemented in a central unit, CU ( 172), of a distributed base station ( 104), the method comprising: communicating, between the CN ( 110) and the UE ( 102), the data packets ( 352); receiving, from the CN ( 110), a first indication of an end of a data burst that includes the DL data packets ( 356); and transmitting, to a distributed unit, DU ( 174), of the distributed base station and in response to the receiving of the first indication, a second indication of the end of the data burst ( 358).
