Apple patents method for phones to suggest uplink data speeds to networks

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Apple describes a way for a device to tell a cell tower what data speeds it can handle when sending information. The phone shares details like its minimum and target upload speeds so the network can pick a suitable rate for the connection.

Why it mattersThis is a routine technical improvement that helps mobile networks manage data traffic more efficiently by using specific speed hints from the device.

In the filing’s own words

In accordance with aspects of the present disclosure, a user equipment (UE) may be configured to provide uplink bit rate assistance information to an access node. The uplink bit rate assistance information can include, e. g., a minimum uplink bit rate, a target uplink bit rate, a difference between the minimum and target uplink bit rates, and/or a list of supported uplink bit rates for a particular data transport entity, which can include a quality of service (QOS) flow, a data radio bearer (DRB), or a logical channel (LCH). The UE can provide the uplink bit rate assistance information to the access node via a UE assistance information (UAI) message or a recommended bit rate query message. The access node can use the uplink bit rate assistance information provided by the UE to configure a suitable uplink bit rate for the associated logical data transport entity.
