Google patents smart antennas that adjust audio broadcast based on listener feedback
This filing describes a method where a device broadcasting audio uses multiple antennas to send out sound packets. It listens for signal quality reports from receivers, calculates the best direction to send the audio, and updates its antenna settings to improve the connection.
In the filing’s own words
The antennas of a user equipment (UE) broadcast packets of an audio stream on isochronous channels in one or more directions based on an antenna tuning profile. Concurrently with broadcasting these packets, the UE listens for advertisement packets each indicating corresponding link quality data from a receiver device subscribed to the audio stream and the UE determines the angles of arrival at which the advertisement packets were received. Using the link quality data and angles of arrival of the advertisement packets, the UE determines beamform weights that indicate a desired beamform pattern for the antennas of the UE. The UE then updates the antenna tuning profile based on the beamform weights and the antennas of the UE broadcast additional packets of the audio stream in directions as indicated by the updated antenna tuning profile.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A user equipment (UE), comprising broadcast circuitry including a plurality of antennas configured to broadcast at least a first packet of an audio stream in one or more directions based on an antenna tuning profile; and tracking circuitry configured to: receive a plurality of advertisement packets, each packet of the plurality of advertisement packets including link status data for a corresponding receiver device receiving the broadcast at least one first packet of the audio stream; determine one or more beamforming weights based on the link status data and an angle of arrival of each advertisement packet of the plurality of advertisement packets; and update the antenna tuning profile based on the beamforming weights to produce an updated antenna tuning profile, wherein the plurality of antennas of the broadcast circuitry are configured to broadcast at least one additional packet of the audio stream in one or more directions based on the updated antenna tuning profile.
