Samsung patents display fix for lenticular lens distortion
Samsung has filed a patent for a method that corrects visual distortion in displays using lenticular lenses. The system identifies areas in an image where edges align with the lens's slant angle and adjusts the sub-pixel values in those specific rows to compensate for the effect.
In the filing’s own words
A method performed by a display device including a lenticular lens is provided. The method includes obtaining, by the display device, a target image, identifying, by the display device, a predefined slanted angle of the lenticular lens, identifying, by the display device, in the target image, at least one area including at least one edge having a slanted angle of which similarity to the slanted angle of the lenticular lens is within a preset range, selecting, by the display device, a plurality of sub-pixels of a same row as a first sub-pixel included in the identified at least one area, and allocating, by the display device, a first combination value to an output value of each of the plurality of sub-pixels, the first combination value being obtained by combining values of the plurality of sub-pixels.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method performed by a display device comprising a lenticular lens, the method comprising: obtaining, by the display device, a target image; identifying, by the display device, a predefined first slanted angle at which the lenticular lens is slanted with respect to a display axis; identifying, by the display device, at least one area in the target image, which comprises at least one edge within the target image, which is slanted with respect to the display axis at a second slanted angle that is within a preset range from the first slanted angle; selecting, by the display device, a plurality of sub-pixels based on a first sub-pixel comprised in the identified at least one area; and allocating, by the display device, a first combination value to an output value of each of the plurality of sub-pixels, the first combination value being obtained by combining values of the plurality of sub-pixels.
