Tesla patents method to cut radio noise from wireless car charging

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Tesla describes a system that measures radio wave interference during wireless charging and automatically adjusts the power settings to reduce it. The controller changes the voltage or timing of the charging pad to keep emissions within acceptable limits.

Why it mattersThis could help ensure Tesla's wireless charging pads meet strict radio frequency regulations without requiring manual tuning.

In the filing’s own words

Systems and methods are described for reducing emissions associated with wireless power transfer. One or more controllers may be configured to receive emissions data including an emission measurement associated with inductive charging between a vehicle pad and a ground pad. The one or more controllers may further determine one or more adjustment parameters based on the emissions data. The one or more adjustment parameters may include a bus voltage of the ground pad. The one or more adjustment parameters may include one or more of a ground pad duty cycle, a vehicle pad duty cycle, or a switching frequency. The one or more controllers may adjust the bus voltage of the ground pad in accordance with the one or more adjustment parameters.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A method of wireless power transfer, the method comprising: receiving emissions data, the emissions data comprising an emission measurement associated with inductive charging between a vehicle pad and a ground pad; determining one or more adjustment parameters based on the emissions data, the one or more adjustment parameters comprising a bus voltage of the ground pad; and adjusting the bus voltage of the ground pad in accordance with the one or more adjustment parameters.
