Nvidia patents method to clean up moving 3D surfaces in graphics
Nvidia describes a technique to reduce visual noise in computer-generated images of moving, complex surfaces. The system calculates how these surfaces have moved between frames by comparing their current position to their previous position, even if the surface shape has changed or been displaced.
In the filing’s own words
In various examples, images of geometrically refined parametric surfaces may be denoised using motion vectors computed in 2D screen space and/or using locations of corresponding control points. Surfaces in a scene may be geometrically refined (e.g., subdivided or tessellated), an image of the scene may be ray traced or rasterized, and motion vectors may be computed in 2D screen space and/or using corresponding control points on the control cages for geometrically refined parametric surfaces. In some embodiments with displaced surfaces, motion vectors are computed by comparing 3D locations on a rendered (displaced) surface or by comparing corresponding 3D locations on the limit surface, and displacement may be determined using the applicable displacement function (e.g., a displacement map, texture, procedural math function, some combination thereof) or by measuring or deriving it from approximated locations on the displaced and limit surfaces. As such, the image may be denoised using the motion vectors.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. One or more processors comprising processing circuitry to: compute, for at least one pixel of one or more pixels of a current frame, a current location on a displaced surface corresponding to the pixel; compute, for the at least one pixel of the one or more pixels based at least on a parametric representation of the current location on the displaced surface corresponding to the pixel, a reconstructed previous location on a limit surface corresponding to the displaced surface in a previous frame; compute a motion vector based at least on the current location on the displaced surface and the reconstructed previous location on the limit surface; and denoise the current frame based at least on the motion vector.
