Tesla patents car-to-car data sharing to fix GPS errors

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

This filing describes a system where a vehicle uses its cameras to pinpoint its exact location on a map and calculates a correction for any GPS errors. It then shares this precise location data and raw signal information with nearby vehicles through a server, allowing them to calculate their own positions more accurately. This method helps other cars get a better fix even when satellite signals are weak or blocked.

Why it mattersThis could make self-driving cars more reliable in cities or tunnels where standard GPS often fails, improving safety for everyone on the road.

In the filing’s own words

Various vehicle technologies for improving positioning accuracy despite various factors that affect signals from navigation satellites. Such positioning accuracy is increased via determining an offset and communicating the offset in various ways or via sharing of raw positioning data between a plurality of devices, where at least one knows its location sufficiently accurately, for use in differential algorithms.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. An apparatus for determining a position and pose of a vehicle, the apparatus comprising: the vehicle including a processor and a memory, wherein the processor is in communication with the memory and the memory stores a set of instructions that when executed via the processor cause the processor to: vision-localize the vehicle to a map; generate pose data of the vehicle that is moving based on the map; determine an average of a plurality of position measurements of the vehicle position over a period of time according to variances in the plurality of position measurements satisfying a threshold; generate correction data corresponding to the average of the plurality of position measurements of the vehicle position over the period of time and the threshold being satisfied, wherein the correction data includes an offset based on the average and a position of the vehicle indicated by the pose data; generate a raw positioning measurement value, wherein a second vehicle determines a position vector relative to the vehicle using the pose data and the raw positioning measurement value, the second vehicle having a position in spatial proximity of the vehicle and a temporal proximity of the vehicle; and send the pose data, the correction data, and the raw positioning measurement value to a hardware server, wherein the hardware server broadcasts the pose data, the correction data, and the raw positioning measurement value to the second vehicle, wherein the pose data comprises the position and orientation of the vehicle that is moving and is determined by capturing images from an image sensor on the vehicle while the vehicle is moving.
