Nike patents system to use digital items across different apps
Nike describes a method for letting users access digital items, like virtual sneakers, on different websites or apps without moving the original file. The system checks if you own the item using a blockchain record and sends a temporary code to the new platform so you can use it there.
In the filing’s own words
Presented are computing systems for transferring digital assets between virtual platforms, methods for making/using such systems, and digital assets imported/exported by such systems. A method for controlling transfer of digital assets includes storing a fungible digital asset on a digital platform in association with a personal account of a user. A server computer of the digital platform receives a user request to transfer the fungible digital asset to another digital platform; in response, the fungible digital asset is converted to a non-fungible digital asset by generating a cryptographic (crypto) token, assigning the crypto token to the digital asset, and recording the crypto token on a blockchain ledger. The newly minted digital asset is transferred to an intermediate computing node and associated with another personal account of the user. The non-fungible digital asset is then transferred to the requested digital platform and associated with yet another personal account of the user.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method for granting cross-platform access to a digital asset via an intermediary platform, the method comprising: receiving, by a server computer of the intermediary platform, an access request from a first user account to enable use of the digital asset on a partner platform, wherein: the partner platform is a centralized platform on which digital assets are not recorded on a blockchain, and the first user account is linked to a digital wallet external to the intermediary platform, the digital wallet storing a non-fungible token (NFT) recorded on a blockchain and corresponding to the digital asset; verifying, by the server computer: ownership of the NFT by the first user account via the blockchain, and compliance with a first rule set established by the intermediary platform and a second rule set established by the partner platform; in response to the verifying, generating an unlock code associated with the digital asset and transmitting the unlock code from the intermediary platform to the partner platform, wherein: the partner platform, upon receiving the unlock code, grants access to a corresponding digital asset within the partner platform's system, and the NFT remains in the digital wallet, such that the intermediary platform does not take custodial possession of the NFT.
