Apple patents method for phones to check signal strength across multiple cell groups
Apple has filed a patent application describing how a phone can monitor the quality of its connection to several different cell groups at the same time. The phone tells the network tower how many groups it can check simultaneously, then measures reference signals from inactive cells to detect if the connection is failing.
In the filing’s own words
Methods and apparatus are provided for a user equipment (UE) to monitor link quality on multiple candidate cell groups (CGs) in a wireless network. The UE sends, from the UE to a base station, a UE capability message indicating a number of the candidate CGs for which the UE supports at least one of simultaneous radio link monitoring (RLM) and simultaneous beam failure detection (BFD). The UE processes, at the UE, a configuration by the base station for measuring reference signals corresponding to a plurality of deactivated cells up to the number of the candidate CGs indicated by the UE capability message. The UE measures the reference signals according to the configuration.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method for a user equipment (UE) to monitor link quality on multiple candidate cell groups (CGs) in a wireless network, the method comprising: sending, from the UE to a base station, a UE capability message indicating a number of the candidate CGs for which the UE supports at least one of simultaneous radio link monitoring (RLM) and simultaneous beam failure detection (BFD); processing, at the UE, a configuration by the base station for measuring reference signals corresponding to a plurality of deactivated cells up to the number of the candidate CGs indicated by the UE capability message; and measuring the reference signals according to the configuration.
