Microsoft patents system that checks if personal data matches public records
Microsoft describes a method for spotting potential data leaks by comparing private information against public records. The system uses a machine learning model to find what details are publicly known about a person or entity. If the private data contains details that do not match the public record, the system flags it as a potential security breach.
In the filing’s own words
The present disclosure provides systems and methods for detecting confidential information in input data. A subject entity and a first feature associated with the subject entity are extracted from input data. An indication of the subject entity is submitted to a machine learning feature extractor trained on a public dataset and entity-feature associations expressed in the public dataset. a second feature of the subject entity extracted from the public dataset is received from the ML feature extractor and compared with the first feature. It is determined, based on the comparison, that the first feature is not associated with the subject entity in the public dataset and in response, a data security mitigation action is performed.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A computer-implemented method, comprising: receiving a subject entity and a first feature associated with the subject entity, recognized in input data; inputting an indication of the subject entity to a machine learning (ML) feature extractor, the ML feature extractor having learned via training on a public dataset entity-feature associations expressed in the public dataset; receiving from the ML feature extractor, in response to the indication of the subject entity, a second feature of the subject entity extracted from the public dataset; comparing the first feature with the second feature; determining, based on comparing first feature with the second feature, that the first feature is not associated with the subject entity in the public dataset; and responsive to determining that the first feature is not associated with the subject entity in the public dataset, causing a data security mitigation action to be performed.
