Google patents contact lens case that checks if lenses are stored

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

This filing describes a contact lens case that uses a small light and sensor to check if the lenses are actually inside. A chip in the case sends a pulse of light into the storage slot and measures the reflection to confirm the lenses are present.

Why it mattersIt could help users track whether they are following their doctor's instructions for storing and wearing contact lenses.

In the filing’s own words

A case can be used to determine a presence or absence of an ophthalmic device to help determine user compliance to a wear schedule for the ophthalmic device. The case can include at least one storage well comprising a storage position for an ophthalmic device, a light source configured to generate light and direct the light into the storage well, and a detector configured to detect reflected light from within the storage well. The case can also include a microprocessor coupled to the light source and the detector and configured to: activate the light source to send a pulse of the light toward the storage position, and receive data related to the reflected light of the pulse of the light from the detector. The presence or absence of the ophthalmic device in the storage position can be determined based on the data related to the reflected light.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A case configured for ophthalmic device storage, the case comprising: at least one storage well comprising a storage position for the ophthalmic device; a light source configured to generate light and direct the light into the at least one storage well; a detector configured to detect reflected light from within the at least one storage well; and a microprocessor coupled to the light source and the detector and configured to: activate the light source to send a pulse of the light toward the storage position of the ophthalmic device; and receive data related to the reflected light of the pulse of the light from the detector, wherein a presence or absence of the ophthalmic device in the storage position is determined based on the data related to the reflected light of the pulse of the light.
