Sony patents camera sensor layout to reduce signal interference

Sony describes an imaging device where the order of signal wires connecting to camera pixels is shuffled compared to the physical pixel arrangement. This design, along with optional shield lines, helps prevent electrical noise from one wire from interfering with neighboring wires as they carry image data.

Why it mattersThis technical adjustment aims to improve image clarity by reducing crosstalk, a common issue in high-density camera sensors.

In the filing’s own words

The present disclosure enables transmission of signals through a plurality of signal lines while suppressing crosstalk between signals read out from pixels adjacent to each other. An imaging device includes pixels arrayed in a matrix in a row direction and a column direction, and a plurality of signal lines configured to transmit, simultaneously in the column direction, signals read out from pixels belonging to the same column and in mutually different rows. In at least one column, the signal lines and the pixels are connected such that an array order of the signal lines and an array order of the pixels differ from each other. The imaging device may include shield lines disposed between the signal lines. The shield line may be disposed between signal lines adjacent to each other and connected to different color pixels.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. An imaging device, comprising: pixels arrayed in a matrix in a row direction and a column direction; and a plurality of signal lines configured to transmit, simultaneously in the column direction, signals read out from pixels belonging to the same column and in mutually different rows, wherein, in at least one column, the signal lines and the pixels are connected such that an array order of the signal lines and an array order of the pixels differ from each other.
