Apple patents earbuds that auto-switch audio sources without user input
Apple has filed a patent for a method that allows a headset to maintain two separate connections to different devices simultaneously. The system detects when a new audio signal arrives via a wireless connection and automatically switches the playback to that source, replacing the audio from a wired connection without the user needing to do anything.
In the filing’s own words
A method that includes establishing a first wireless connection between a first electronic device and the headset that is worn on a head of a user; establishing a second wireless connection between a second electronic device and the headset; receiving, via a wired connection with the first electronic device, a first audio signal for audio playback through at least one speaker of the headset; receiving, via the second wireless connection, a second audio signal from the second electronic device; and responsive to the receiving of the second audio signal and without user intervention, using the second audio signal for audio playback through the at least one speaker of the headset in lieu of the first audio signal.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method performed by a headset, the method comprising: establishing a first wireless connection between a first electronic device and the headset that is worn on a head of a user; establishing a second wireless connection between a second electronic device and the headset; receiving, via a wired connection with the first electronic device, a first audio signal for audio playback through at least one speaker of the headset; receiving, via the second wireless connection, a second audio signal from the second electronic device; and responsive to receiving the second audio signal and without user intervention, using the second audio signal for audio playback through the at least one speaker of the headset in lieu of the first audio signal.
