Apple patents 5G signal timing tweaks for multi-antenna setups
This filing describes a method for 5G devices to tell the network they can handle signal delays larger than the standard 'cyclic prefix' limit. The device then adjusts how it reports which antenna beams are working best to the base station.
In the filing’s own words
Apparatuses, systems, and methods for supporting beyond cyclic prefix (CP) maximum receive time difference (MRTD) for multiple transmit-receive point (mTRP) configurations, e.g., in 5G NR systems and beyond. A UE may report, to a network (e.g., to a base station of a network, that the UE supports an MRTD greater than a CP network setting. The report may be sent via at least one of a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE), a physical random access channel (PRACH) resource, or radio resource control (RRC) signaling. The UE may be configured to receive, from the network, a group-based beam reporting configuration, e.g., based on the UE's support of MRTD greater than CP. Further, the UE may be configured to adopt, based on the group-based beam reporting configuration, a beam reporting criterion based on the UE's support of MRTD greater than CP.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method for wireless communication between a user equipment device (UE) and a network, comprising: reporting, to the network, that the UE supports a maximum receive time difference (MRTD) greater than a cyclic prefix (CP) network setting; receiving, from the network, a group-based beam reporting configuration, wherein the group-based beam reporting configuration is based on the UE's support of MRTD greater than CP; and adopting, based on the group-based beam reporting configuration, a beam reporting criterion based on the UE's support of MRTD greater than CP.
