Apple patents screen calibration for medical imaging standards

Apple has filed a patent for a system that calibrates computer displays to meet specific standards for medical imaging. The process involves the computer showing visual patterns while a measurement instrument reads the screen's output, then adjusting the display settings to ensure accuracy.

Why it mattersThis could ensure that medical professionals using Apple hardware can view diagnostic images with the precise color and brightness required for accurate analysis.

In the filing’s own words

The present disclosure generally relates to methods and user interfaces for calibrating a display, including methods and user interfaces for calibrating a display profile of a display based on a standard for display of medical imaging.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A computer system for calibrating a respective display profile of a display based on a standard for display of medical imaging, the computer system configured to communicate with the display, one or more input devices, and a measurement instrument, the computer system comprising: one or more processors; and memory storing one or more programs configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for: displaying, via the display, a user interface of a calibration application; while displaying the user interface of the calibration application, detecting, via the one or more input devices, a set of one or more inputs that initiates calibration of the respective display profile of the display using the measurement instrument; in response to detecting the set of one or more inputs, querying information regarding the measurement instrument; in accordance with a determination that the measurement instrument is a first instrument, displaying, via the display, first instrument information, wherein the determination that the measurement instrument is a first instrument is based on information received from querying information regarding the measurement instrument; in accordance with a determination that the measurement instrument is a second instrument different from the first instrument, displaying, via the display, second instrument information different from the first instrument information, wherein the determination that the measurement instrument is a second instrument is based on the information received from querying information regarding the measurement instrument; performing a calibration process for the respective display profile of the display based on the information received from querying information regarding the measurement instrument, the calibration process including: displaying one or more visual patterns via the display; and receiving data from the measurement instrument based on measuring one or more visual characteristics of the display that are measured by the measurement instrument while the one or more visual patterns are displayed by the display; and after performing the calibration process for the respective display profile of the display: in accordance with a determination that the calibration process is successful, modifying one or more visual display characteristics of the respective display profile based on the calibration process, wherein after modifying the one or more visual display characteristics of the respective display profile based on the calibration process, the respective display profile is compliant with the standard for display of medical imaging; and displaying, via the display, a result of the calibration process.
