Sony patents camera sensor design that blocks light leakage at edges
Sony has filed a patent for a solid-state imaging device, which is the chip inside a camera that captures images. The design uses two different-sized light-blocking walls between color filters, with a wider wall at the edges of the sensor to prevent unwanted light from entering.
In the filing’s own words
A solid-state imaging device includes pixels arranged in a plurality of arrays in a first direction and in a second direction, a first color filter disposed over a plurality of light receiving pixels arranged in the first direction and having a first color, a second color filter disposed over a plurality of light receiving pixels arranged in the first direction and having a second color different from the first color, a first inter-waveguide light shielding wall between the first color filter and the second color filter at an image height center of the pixel region, and and a second inter-waveguide light shielding wall between the first color filter and the second color filter at an image height periphery located away from the image height center of the pixel region and has a width greater than a width of the first inter-waveguide light shielding wall in the same direction.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A solid-state imaging device, comprising: a pixel region including light receiving pixels arranged in a plurality of arrays, the light receiving pixels being arranged in a first direction and a second direction that intersects with the first direction; a first color filter disposed over a plurality of the light receiving pixels arranged in the first direction, the first color filter having a first color; a second color filter disposed over the plurality of the light receiving pixels arranged in the first direction, the second color filter having a second color different from the first color; a first inter-waveguide light shielding wall provided between the first color filter and the second color filter at an image height center of the pixel region, the first inter-waveguide light shielding wall having a light-shielding property; and a second inter-waveguide light shielding wall provided between the first color filter and the second color filter at an image periphery located away from the image height center of the pixel region, the second inter-waveguide light shielding wall having a light-shielding property and having a width greater than a width of the first inter-waveguide light shielding wall in a same direction.
