Google patents display trick to hide weak pixels by sharing light
This filing describes a method where a display controller makes two different pixels take turns lighting up the same spot on the screen. By splitting the work between a stronger pixel and a weaker one, the system aims to make the overall image look more consistent.
In the filing’s own words
Systems and methods for non-fractional pixel shifting are described herein to mitigate pixel performance disparities in display systems. One example display system includes a display for presentation to a user, a pixel panel including a first pixel and a second pixel, and a pixel controller. The first pixel may have a first performance capability with respect to a criterion and the second pixel may have a second performance capability with respect to the criterion. The pixel controller may then cause the display system to present a frame on the display by performing operations including: causing first light emitted by the first pixel to be displayed at a pixel position on the display during presentation of a first subframe of the frame, and causing second light emitted by the second pixel to be displayed at the pixel position on the display during presentation of a second subframe of the frame.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A display system comprising: a display for presentation to a user; a pixel panel including a first pixel and a second pixel, the first pixel having a first performance capability with respect to a criterion and the second pixel having a second performance capability with respect to the criterion; and a pixel controller configured to cause the display system to present a frame on the display by performing operations including: causing first light emitted by the first pixel to be displayed at a pixel position on the display during presentation of a first subframe of the frame; and causing second light emitted by the second pixel to be displayed at the pixel position on the display during presentation of a second subframe of the frame.
