Apple patents method for receiving 5+ data streams with one code
Apple has filed a patent for a way to handle wireless data reception using five or more signal paths, or spatial layers, while still using a single stream of encoded data. The device determines how to map this single data stream across the multiple layers to improve how it receives downlink messages from a base station.
In the filing’s own words
The present disclosure generally relates to spatial multiplexing enhancements for single codeword transmission with five or more spatial layers. In some implementations, a user equipment (UE) is configured to determine a spatial multiplexing configuration to use for reception of at least one downlink message. The UE may determine a mapping between a single codeword and five or more spatial layers based at least on the determined spatial multiplexing configuration. The UE may receive the at least one downlink message using the determined mapping between the single codeword and the five or more spatial layers.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method comprising: determining a spatial multiplexing configuration to use for reception of at least one downlink message; determining a mapping between a single codeword and five or more spatial layers based at least on the determined spatial multiplexing configuration; and receiving the at least one downlink message using the determined mapping between the single codeword and the five or more spatial layers.
