Microsoft patents secure cursor relay for cloud apps
Microsoft describes a system that lets a mouse cursor move smoothly between standard and secure cloud windows on a computer. A special secure processor encrypts your mouse movements so the main computer system cannot see what you are doing inside the secure area. The system calculates where the cursor should go while the data is still encrypted, then sends the result to the cloud server to display the action.
In the filing’s own words
A seamless and secure cloud to PC pointer relay allows a pointer/cursor to be moved between secure and unsecure windows while being displayed with smooth transitions and while transitioning between secure and unsecure data handling for pointer information. A secure input unit encrypts pointing device operations in the secure window. A user (host) computing device performs location calculations on encrypted data, which conceals pointing device operations in the secure window from the host operating system. The secure unit decrypts the encrypted data returned by the host operating system to determine the calculated pointer location information. The secure unit relays the calculated pointer operation information to the source of the secure window (e.g., remote cloud server) to process user interaction with the secure window while keeping the host operating system unaware of user activity in the secure window (e.g., other than position, if the host renders the pointer).
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method in a computing device that comprises a secure processor, a display unit, a central processing unit (CPU), and an operating system (OS) executed by the CPU, the method comprising: detecting, by execution of the OS by the CPU, at least one of a cursor or pointer controlled by a pointing device entering a secure window displayed by the display unit; entering a secured mode; encrypting, by the secure processor, pointing device information regarding a pointing device operation that occurred in the secure window; performing a calculation upon the encrypted pointing device information, by execution of the OS by the CPU and without the OS decrypting the pointing device information, to generate encrypted calculated pointing device information; decrypting, by the secure processor, the encrypted calculated pointing device information to determine decrypted calculated pointing device information indicative of the pointing device operation; and sending the decrypted calculated pointing device information to at least enable the pointing device operation to be displayed with regard to the secure window.
