Nike patents layered printing method for textured textile components

Nike describes a method for creating textured surfaces on fabrics by screen printing a thick, viscous polyurethane layer followed by a thinner layer. The process uses specific chemical mixtures with different thicknesses to build up patterns on the material.

Why it mattersThis technique allows manufacturers to create specific tactile patterns and structural details on clothing or shoes without using separate physical molds.

In the filing’s own words

A printing method includes: (A) screen printing a first print media material onto a substrate, the first print media material including at least: a polyurethane material, water, a cross-linker material, and a rheological modifier and having a viscosity within a range of 40,000 to 80,000 centipoise; and (B) thereafter, screen printing a second print media material onto an exposed surface of the first print media material, the second print media material including at least: a polyurethane material, water, and a cross-linker material and having has a viscosity within a range of 3500 to 10,000 centipoise. In some examples, the substrate to which the first print media material is applied may have a previously applied print media material fixed to it (from a print media material including at least: polyurethane material, water, cross-linker material, and rheological modifier and having a viscosity within a range of 85,000 to 500,000 centipoise).

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A method, comprising: screen printing a first print media material onto a substrate, the first print media material including at least: a polyurethane material, water, a cross-linker material, and a rheological modifier, wherein the first print media material has a viscosity within a range of 40,000 to 80,000 centipoise; and thereafter, screen printing a second print media material onto an exposed surface of the first print media material, the second print media material including at least: a polyurethane material, water, and a cross-linker material, wherein the second print media material has a viscosity within a range of 3500 to 10,000 centipoise.
