Apple patents method to combine separate radio bands for faster data

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Apple describes a way for phones to treat two different radio frequency bands as one single channel. The phone tells the cell tower which bands it can use for sending and receiving data, allowing the tower to set up a combined link for the connection.

Why it mattersThis technical adjustment could help mobile devices manage their data connections more efficiently by using available spectrum more flexibly.

In the filing’s own words

The present application relates to improve the data communications between a user equipment (UE) and a base station. In an example, the UE can indicate, to the base station, its support of pairing an uplink band with a downlink band to define a frequency division duplex (FDD) band. The uplink band can belong to a first frequency band, whereas the downlink band can belong to a second frequency band. The base station can configure the FDD band for the UE in association with a cell. Data communications can accordingly be performed using FDD.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A method comprising: processing configuration information indicating a configuration associated with a cell, wherein the configuration includes an identifier corresponding to a set of frequency bands and indicates that the set of frequency bands is usable as a single frequency division duplexing (FDD) band, wherein the set includes a first frequency band and a second frequency band, and wherein each one of the first frequency band and the second frequency band has a corresponding identifier different from the identifier corresponding to the set; determining, based on the identifier corresponding to the set, an uplink band within the first frequency band and a downlink band within the second frequency band; and using, according to FDD, the uplink band and the downlink band for data communications associated with the cell.
