Apple patents method for phones to help train network AI models
Apple describes a system where a phone receives instructions from a cell tower to measure specific wireless signals. The phone uses this data to train a small artificial intelligence model locally and then sends the results back to the tower to help train a larger network model.
In the filing’s own words
Aspects are described for a user equipment (UE) comprising a transceiver configured to enable wireless communication with a base station, and a processor communicatively coupled to the transceiver. The processor is configured to receive a configuration message from the base station, wherein the configuration message indicates a model identifications (ID) and one or more signals and measure the one or more signals to generate a data set corresponding to the model ID. The processor is further configured to train a first artificial intelligence (AI) model corresponding to the model ID using the data set; generate a second data set corresponding the model ID; and transmit the second data set and the model ID to the base station. The second data set is used to train a second AI model corresponding to the model ID.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A user equipment (UE) comprising: a transceiver configured to enable wireless communications with a base station; and a processor, communicatively coupled to the transceiver, and configured to: receive, using the transceiver, a configuration message from the base station, wherein the configuration message comprises a model identification (ID) and indicates one or more signals corresponding to the model ID; measure, using the transceiver, the one or more signals to generate a data set corresponding to the model ID; train a first artificial intelligence (AI) model corresponding to the model ID using the data set; generate a second data set corresponding to the model ID; and transmit, using the transceiver, the second data set labeled using the model ID and the model ID to the base station, wherein the second data set enables a second AI model corresponding to the model ID to be trained at the base station.
