Apple patents circuit that cleans up radio noise in wireless devices

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Apple describes a circuit that helps wireless devices handle radio frequency interference by choosing between two types of signal processing. It uses a classifier to check if the device's front-end circuit is working normally, then picks either a cleaned or a clipped signal to keep the connection stable.

Why it mattersThis is a technical improvement for internal hardware that helps maintain clear wireless connections, though it is not visible to users.

In the filing’s own words

Effective radio frequency interference (RFI) mitigation techniques are disclosed for use in wireless communication devices, among others. An RFI mitigation circuit may include a selector circuit to select between a cleaned signal and a clipped signal, and provide the selected signal as an output signal. The RFI mitigation circuit may also include a classifier circuit to generate a control input indication to the selector circuit to have the cleaned signal selected as the output signal based at least on a front-end circuit signal indicating that the front-end circuit is operating linearly and also indicating that the front-end circuit signal includes an interference signal. The classifier circuit may also generate the control input indication to have the clipped signal selected as the output signal based at least on the front-end circuit signal indicating that the front-end circuit is not operating linearly.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A radio frequency interference (RFI) mitigation circuit comprising: a selector circuit configured to select between a cleaned signal and a clipped signal, and provide the selected signal as an output signal; and a classifier circuit configured to cause the selector circuit to select the cleaned signal as the output signal based at least on a front-end circuit signal indicating that the front-end circuit is operating linearly; and select the clipped signal as the output signal based at least on the front-end circuit signal indicating that the front-end circuit is not operating linearly.
