Amazon patents kiosk that charges you after you leave
This filing describes a self-service kiosk where customers open a door, pick items, and walk away without scanning or paying at the counter. The system uses weight sensors on the shelves and cameras to figure out what was taken and charges the customer's account automatically after they leave.
In the filing’s own words
Disclosed are systems, methods, and apparatus of an automated and self-service kiosk that allows customers to select inventory items available from the kiosk and walk or move away with selected inventory item(s) without having to process payment, identify the inventory item(s), or provide any other form of checkout. After a customer has picked one or more items and departed the kiosk, the picked items are determined and the customer charged for the items. For example, one or more of detected weight changes measured at the kiosk and/or images generated at the kiosk may be used to identify items picked by the customer from the kiosk.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An apparatus, comprising: a housing including an interior area; at least one shelf positioned within the interior area of the housing; a door movable between a closed position that prevents access to the interior area of the housing and an open position that enables access to the interior area of the housing; a locking mechanism associated with the door and configured to engage or disengage the door relative to the closed position; an input component configured to receive unique identifiers; at least one weight sensor associated with the at least one shelf, the at least one weight sensor operable to measure a weight of one or more items positioned on the at least one shelf; an imaging device positioned proximate the door of the housing; one or more processors; and a memory storing program instructions that when executed by the one or more processors cause the one or more processors to at least: receive, from the input component, a unique identifier associated with a user; and in response to receipt of the unique identifier: initiate a session; instruct the locking mechanism to disengage the door such that the door is movable from the closed position to the open position; detect a movement of the door from the closed position to the open position; responsive to disengaging the door by the locking mechanism, instruct the at least one weight sensor to detect weight sensor data during the session; detect a movement of the door from the open position to the closed position; instruct the locking mechanism to engage the door such that the door is retained in the closed position; responsive to engaging the door by the locking mechanism, instruct the at least one weight sensor to stop detecting weight sensor data during the session; complete the session; and responsive to completion of the session, process the weight sensor data detected by the at least one weight sensor to determine one or more events during the session.
