Apple patents system that sends complex requests to remote models

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

This patent describes a method for Apple devices to decide how to handle user requests based on their complexity. Simple tasks are handled by a local digital assistant, while more complex tasks are sent to a larger, remote model after the user gives permission.

Why it mattersThis approach could improve how Siri handles difficult questions by using more powerful cloud-based tools when needed, while keeping simple tasks private and fast on the device.

In the filing’s own words

Systems and processes for delegating tasks to electronic devices based on intents and associated applications are provided. For example, receiving an input from a user at an electronic device, wherein the input is associated with an intent and determining, based on the intent, an intent type. In accordance with a determination that the intent type is a first type, causing a digital assistant to perform an action associated with the intent, and in accordance with a determination that the intent type is a second type, different than the first type, transmitting instructions to a model remote to the electronic device, wherein the instructions cause the model to perform an action associated with the intent.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. An electronic device, comprising: a display generation component; one or more processors; a memory; and one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are stored in the memory and are configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for: receiving an input from a user, wherein the input is associated with an intent; determining, based on the intent, an intent type; in accordance with a determination that the intent type is a first intent type: causing a first digital assistant to perform an action associated with the intent; and in accordance with a determination that the intent type is a second intent type, different than the first intent type: providing a prompt, wherein the prompt indicates a request can be shared to a model to satisfy the intent; receiving a second input associated with the prompt; and in accordance with a determination that the second input is associated with a permission to share the request to the model: transmitting instructions to the model different than the first digital assistant and remote to the electronic device wherein the instructions cause the model to perform the action associated with the intent, wherein the first digital assistant includes fewer nodes than the model; and after transmitting the instructions to the model: receiving, at the first digital assistant, a response from the model; and providing the response.
