Apple patents method to shrink messages when network is weak
Apple has been granted a patent for a system that automatically creates smaller versions of messages when a wireless connection is weak. The device checks the network quality and, if it is below a certain level, sends a compressed version of the text that the receiving device can expand back to the original form.
In the filing’s own words
Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for sending a reduced size message. One of the methods includes receiving, by a wireless device, a request to send, over a wireless network, a message comprising one or more phrases; determining that a connection quality for the wireless network does not satisfy a connection quality threshold; generating, responsive to determining that the connection quality threshold is not satisfied, a reduced-size message based at least in part on the one or more phrases; and sending, by the wireless device and via the wireless network, the reduced-size message.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A computer-implemented method comprising: receiving, by a first device from a second device over a wireless network, a message comprising at least one element, wherein the message comprises a first data subset that includes the at least one element and a second, different data subset and the message that comprises the at least one element that indicates that the first device has a decompression engine for decompressing the message; determining whether the at least one element was included in the received message and indicates that the first device is part of a predetermined system, the determining comprising determining whether the at least one element represents that the message does not comprise one or more phrases from an original message and indicates that the first device has the decompression engine; determining whether to decompress the message using a first result of the determination whether the at least one element was included in the received message and indicates that the first device is part of the predetermined system, the determining comprising determining, by the first device, whether to decompress the message with the decompression engine using the first result of the determination, based on the at least one element indicating that the first device has a decompression engine for decompressing the message, that the at least one element represents that the message does not comprise the one or more phrases from the original message and indicates that the first device has the decompression engine; and performing one or more actions based at least on a second result of the determination whether to decompress the message.
