Amazon patents backup routes for 5G data processing
This patent describes a system for managing data traffic in radio-based networks like 5G. It uses a route reflector to send primary and backup paths to a tunnel host, ensuring data is processed by a specific network function even if one server fails.
In the filing’s own words
Disclosed are various embodiments that provide highly available data-processing network functions for radio-based networks. In one embodiment, routing information is received from a plurality of instantiations of a data-processing network function of a radio-based network. Based at least in part on the routing information, a route to a first instantiation of the plurality of instantiations of the data-processing network function is advertised. Based at least in part on the routing information, a backup route to a second instantiation of the plurality of instantiations of the data-processing network function is advertised.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A system, comprising: a tunnel host executed in a first computing device and configured to consistently route network traffic on a radio-based network corresponding to a respective range of network addresses to a respective instantiation of a data-processing network function of a plurality of instantiations of the data-processing network function that process the network traffic before forwarding the network traffic to a plurality of user devices on the radio-based network, wherein the data-processing network function comprises a User Plane Function (UPF); and a route reflector executed in a second computing device and configured to receive routing information from the plurality of instantiations of the data-processing network function and forward the routing information to the tunnel host, the routing information comprising a first advertisement for a route for the respective range of network addresses to a first instantiation of the data-processing network function and a second advertisement for a backup route for the respective range of network addresses to a second instantiation of the data-processing network function.
