Apple patents method for phones to measure signal strength during 5G activation
Apple has been granted a patent for a way phones measure signal quality when connecting to an extra 5G channel. The phone uses specific reference signals to check the connection strength and calculates how much signal power is lost over distance. It then sends this data back to the cell tower to help manage the connection.
In the filing’s own words
A user equipment (UE) may receive, from a base station (BS) configured to support activation of a secondary cell (SCell), a request to provide a measurement report. In response to the request, the UE may perform one or more measurements on the SCell using one or more reference signals (RSs). Additionally or alternatively, the UE may generate the measurement report based on the one or more measurements and further transmit the measurement report to the BS. In some embodiments, the UE may further determine a pathloss estimation based on the one or more measurements.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A method, comprising: receiving, from a base station (BS) configured to support activation of a secondary cell (SCell), a request to provide a measurement report; performing, in response to the request, one or more measurements on the SCell using one or more reference signals (RSs); generating, based on the one or more measurements, the measurement report; transmitting the measurement report to the BS; determining, based on the one or more measurements, a pathloss estimation; performing, based at least in part on an activation of at least one of the one or more PL-RSs and an uplink spatial relation (USR), one or more additional pathloss measurements; and determining, based on the one or more additional pathloss measurements, an additional pathloss estimation.
