Apple patents camera guide that helps you film 3D video

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

Apple has been granted a patent for a camera interface that helps users capture 3D video. The system displays a virtual marker on the screen to show the starting viewpoint and changes its position or appearance if the user moves the camera too far away. This guides the user to keep the camera steady and aligned for better spatial media quality.

Why it mattersThis feature could make it easier for consumers to record high-quality 3D video on their devices without needing professional stabilization gear.

In the filing’s own words

The present disclosure generally relates to methods and interfaces for capturing media with a camera application. In some examples, a computer system captures media based on gaze, modifies video playback to improve viewing comfort, and/or surfaces a view setting for media playback based on media stability characteristics. In some examples, a computer system displays one or more of: a camera preview with a level indicator, a camera preview for spatial media capture with prompts to improve capture quality, a camera preview for spatial media capture with a camera movement indicator, and/or a camera preview for media capture with viewpoint stability guidance.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A computer system configured to communicate with a display generation component and one or more cameras, the computer system comprising: one or more processors; and memory storing one or more programs configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for: while capturing spatial video media of an environment using the one or more cameras, wherein the spatial video media includes a first video component corresponding to a viewpoint of a right eye and a second video component, different from the first video component, corresponding to a viewpoint of a left eye that when viewed concurrently create an illusion of a spatial representation of the environment, displaying, via the display generation component, a virtual indicator element of an anchor location in the environment that represents a respective viewpoint corresponding to the spatial video media, wherein the virtual indicator element is displayed while the environment is visible via the display generation component, wherein the respective viewpoint corresponds to an initial viewpoint from which capture of the spatial video media is initiated; while displaying the virtual indicator element while the environment is visible via the display generation component, detecting a first change in a viewpoint from which the spatial video media is being captured; and in response to detecting the first change in the viewpoint from which the spatial video media is being captured, changing an appearance of the virtual indicator element to indicate the respective viewpoint corresponding to the spatial video media, wherein changing the appearance of the virtual indicator element includes: in accordance with a determination that a viewpoint of the computer system has moved away from the respective viewpoint by a first amount, displaying the virtual indicator element at a first distance from a center of a current viewpoint of the computer system; and in accordance with a determination that the viewpoint of the computer system has moved away the respective viewpoint by a second amount, different from the first amount, displaying the virtual indicator element at a second distance from a center of the current viewpoint of the computer system, different from the first distance.
