Amazon patents system to automatically resize database resources on shared servers

1. A system, comprising: at least one processor; and a memory, storing program instructions that when executed by the at least one processor cause the at least one processor to implement a virtualization manager for a plurality of database instances hosted on the system, wherein each of the plurality of database instances having a respective host management and query engine, the virtualization manager configured to: monitor respective utilization of one or more computing resources by the plurality of database instances, captured within a period of time by respective host management of the plurality of database instances, to detect a scaling event for one database instance of the plurality of database instances according to an evaluation of the respective utilization of the one or more computing resources by the one database instance with respect to a target capacity for the one database instance; responsive to the detection of the scaling event for the one database instance: determine, based on the respective utilization of the one or more computing resources by the one database instance, a modified target capacity for the one database instance; based on the modified target capacity for the one database instance, instruct the host management of the one database instance to perform an adjustment to an amount of the one or more computing resources made available to the system to use for one or more other database instances of the plurality of database instances at the system; and the host management further instructs the query engine of the one database instance to perform the adjustment to at least one of the one or more computing resources.
