Samsung patents VR headset that adjusts safety zones based on activity
Samsung has been granted a patent for a head-mounted display that automatically adjusts its virtual safety boundaries depending on the type of virtual reality application being used. The device identifies whether an app is static or dynamic and sends updated information about these protection areas to other systems when the user switches between them.
In the filing’s own words
A head mounted display (HMD) device is provided. The HMD includes: a communication interface; a processor; and memory storing instructions, which, when executed by the processor, cause the HMD device to: execute a first application related to virtual reality, identify a protection area of the HMD device corresponding to the first application, the protection area of the HMD device being set based on a position of the HMD device, and transmit information related to a change in the protection area of the HMD device through the communication interface, based on the protection area of the HMD device changing.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A head mounted display (HMD) device comprising: communication circuitry; at least one processor including processing circuitry; and memory storing instructions, which, when executed by the at least one processor individually or collectively, cause the HMD device to: execute a first application related to virtual reality, identify a first protection area of the HMD device based on a first characteristic of the first application indicating that the first application is a static application, the first protection area of the HMD device being set based on a location of the HMD device, transmit information indicating the first protection area via the communication circuitry, change a protection area of the HMD device from the first protection area to a second protection area based on a second application being executed after execution of the first application, wherein the second protection area is identified based on a second characteristic of the second application indicating that the second application is a dynamic application, and wherein the second protection area is maintained during execution of the second application while an amount of activity of a user who wears the HMD device varies, and based on the protection area changing to the second protection area, transmit information indicating the second protection area via the communication circuitry.
