Sony patents wireless data recovery for video streams
Sony has been granted a patent for a decoding system that manages how video data is received over a wireless connection. The system uses specific labels to track where each piece of data is stored and automatically asks the sender to retransmit any missing or corrupted segments.
In the filing’s own words
Provided is a decoding apparatus that includes a reception unit, a first storage unit, a second storage unit, and a decoding unit. The reception unit receives a plurality of pieces of encoded data generated by encoding a plurality of pieces of frame data to be wirelessly transmitted, and identification information being assigned to each of the plurality of pieces of frame data. The first storage unit stores each of the received plurality of pieces of encoded data in a predetermined storage area. The second storage unit stores, on a basis of the identification information corresponding to each of the plurality of pieces of encoded data, an address of the storage area of the first storage unit. The decoding unit reads the encoded data from the first storage unit on a basis of the stored address, and decodes the read encoded data.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A decoding apparatus, comprising: a reception unit configured to receive, from an external apparatus, a first plurality of pieces of encoded data, wherein the first plurality of pieces of encoded data is generated based on an encoding process of a plurality of pieces of frame data, and identification information is assigned to each of the plurality of pieces of frame data; a first storage unit configured to store each of the received first plurality of pieces of encoded data in a specific storage area; a second storage unit configured to store a specific address of the specific storage area based on the identification information, wherein the identification information corresponds to each of the first plurality of pieces of encoded data that is stored at the specific address; a decoding unit configured to: read the first plurality of pieces of encoded data from the first storage unit based on the specific address; decode the read first plurality of pieces of encoded data; and notify, the second storage unit, of the reception of the first plurality of pieces of encoded data, wherein the first storage unit is further configured to delete, based on the reception of the first plurality of pieces of encoded data, the read first plurality of pieces of encoded data decoded by the decoding unit, and the second storage unit is further configured to delete the specific address based on the notification; a detection unit configured to detect a second plurality of pieces of encoded data based on the identification information, wherein the second plurality of pieces of encoded data is associated with a failure of the reception by the reception unit; and a notification unit configured to notify, based on the detected second plurality of pieces of encoded data, the external apparatus of specific information, wherein the specific information is associated with the detected second plurality of pieces of encoded data, based on the detected second plurality of pieces of encoded data that is continuous, the specific information includes a minimum value and a maximum value that are associated with the identification information, the reception unit is further configured to receive, based on the notified specific information, transmission encoded data that includes at least one piece of the first plurality of pieces of encoded data, and re-encoded data, the re-encoded data includes at least one piece of the second plurality of pieces of encoded data, the at least one piece of the second plurality of pieces of encoded data is re-encoded based on the notified specific information, and the transmission encoded data is within a transmission packet of a wireless transmission of the transmission encoded data.
