Amazon patents system that predicts when to show code suggestions
Amazon has been granted a patent for a system that predicts when a programmer is likely to want a code suggestion. It uses a machine learning model to analyze the current code context and the user's past behavior to decide when to automatically fetch a suggestion from a larger AI model.
In the filing’s own words
Automated triggers for obtaining code suggestions may predicted for development environments. When characters are received to add to a code file, metadata describing the context of the code file for adding the received characters and past code suggestion behavior for a user of the development environment may be determined as input features for a machine learning model trained to predict whether to automatically trigger obtaining a code suggestion. If an auto trigger prediction is determined, then a generative machine learning model may be invoked to generate a code suggestion for a user and the code suggestion provided via an interface of the development environment.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A system, comprising: at least one processor; and a memory, storing program instructions that when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to: responsive to receipt, via an interface of a development environment, of individual ones of a plurality of characters to add to a code file: determine metadata describing a context for the code file and past code suggestion behavior for a user of the development environment; provide the metadata as input to a machine learning classifier model trained to determine whether to automatically trigger obtaining a code suggestion generated by a language machine learning model trained to predict further code to add to code files; responsive to a determination to automatically trigger obtaining the code suggestion: obtain the code suggestion from the language machine learning model based at least partly on the plurality of characters; and provide the code suggestion via the interface of the development environment; and wherein the language machine learning model is hosted as part of a code development service offered by a provider network, and wherein the program instructions implement a plugin for the development environment that, upon addition to the development environment, the plugin is configured to enable the user to receive code suggestions from the code development service in the development environment.
