Google patents tool that sharpens medical procedure video details

Patent drawing
Patent drawing from the official filing.

This patent describes a system that uses two machine learning models to enhance video recordings of medical procedures. The first model identifies specific areas of interest in the footage, and the second model generates high-resolution images of those areas to create a clearer presentation.

Why it mattersThis could help doctors and students review surgical videos with greater clarity by automatically highlighting and sharpening key anatomical features.

In the filing’s own words

In some embodiments, a method of automatically generating high-resolution images of features of interest to accompany video data of a medical procedure of a given type is provided. A computing system provides the video data of the medical procedure to a first machine learning model trained to annotate features of interest. The computing system provides annotated portions of the video data to a second machine learning model trained on past images of features of interest to produce superresolution images of features of interest. The computing system generates a presentation of the video data of the medical procedure that includes the superresolution images of the features of interest produced by the second machine learning model.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having logic stored thereon that, in response to execution by one or more processors of a computing system, cause the computing system to perform actions for automatically generating high-resolution images of features of interest to accompany video data of a medical procedure of a given type, the actions comprising: providing, by the computing system, the video data of the medical procedure to a first machine learning model trained to annotate features of interest; providing, by the computing system, annotated portions of the video data to a second machine learning model trained on past images of features of interest to produce superresolution images of features of interest; and generating, by the computing system, a presentation of the video data of the medical procedure that includes the superresolution images of the features of interest produced by the second machine learning model; wherein the presentation of the video data of the medical procedure that includes the superresolution images of the features of interest includes a zoomed inset version of at least one superresolution image.
