Samsung patents robot that follows pets using wearable tags
Samsung describes a mobile robot that tracks a pet wearing a small sensor device. The robot uses signals from the tag to determine its direction and distance, allowing it to follow the animal or stop when close. If the pet stays still for too long, the robot sends a signal to a base station to trigger an alert.
In the filing’s own words
A pet care system includes a mobile robot comprising a first communication circuit configured to transmit a search signal through a first communication method and a second communication circuit configured to transmit event occurrence information through a second communication method different from the first communication method. The system includes a wearable device including a sensor configured to transmit a response signal through the first communication method in response to the search signal. The system includes a station comprising an operation dispenser configured to perform a predetermined operation based on the reception of the event occurrence information. The mobile robot further comprises a processor configured to determine a moving direction of the mobile robot based on the response signal received from the wearable device.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A mobile robot comprising: a main body; a communication circuit configured to transmit a search signal and configured to receive a response signal from a wearable device worn on a pet, the received response signal corresponding to the search signal; a mobility driver configured to move a position of the main body; and a processor configured to: determine a moving direction of the mobile robot based on the response signal, control the mobility driver based on the moving direction of the main body, detect an event occurrence in which the wearable device does not move for a predetermined period of time based on the response signal received from the wearable device, transmit event occurrence information to a station so that the station outputs a sound based on the detection of the event occurrence, determine an operation of the mobility driver according to a separation distance from the wearable device, control the mobility driver to stop when the separation distance is within a first distance from the wearable device, control the mobility driver to change a direction toward a position of the wearable device when the separation distance is greater than the first distance from the wearable device and within a second distance from the wearable device, wherein the second distance is greater than the first distance, and control the mobility driver to move while following the wearable device when the separation distance is greater than the second distance from the wearable device.
