Samsung patents camera sensor with extra filters for finer color detail
Samsung has been granted a patent for an image sensor that combines standard red, green, and blue filters with additional multi-spectral filters. These extra filters allow the sensor to detect light in very narrow wavelength bands, providing more specific data than traditional color filters alone.
In the filing’s own words
An image sensor includes: a light filter; and a light detector that includes a plurality of pixels disposed on a lower portion of the light filter, the light detector being configured to detect light transmitted through the light filter. The light filter includes: a color filter that includes a plurality of red filters, a plurality of green filters, and a plurality of blue filters. The light filter includes: a plurality of multi-spectral filters disposed adjacent to and coplanar with the color filter, each of the plurality of multispectral filters including a plurality of band filters configured to transmit light in different wavelength bands. Each of the plurality of band filters is configured to transmit light in a band filter wavelength range that is narrower than a wavelength range of the plurality of red filters, the plurality of green filters and the plurality of blue filters.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An image sensor comprising: a light filter; and a light detector that comprises a plurality of pixels disposed on a lower portion of the light filter, the light detector being configured to detect light at least of a visible spectrum and transmitted through the light filter, wherein the light filter comprises: a color filter that comprises a plurality of red filters, a plurality of green filters, and a plurality of blue filters, and a plurality of multi-spectral filters disposed adjacent to and coplanar with the color filter, each of the plurality of multispectral filters comprising a plurality of band filters configured to transmit light in different wavelength bands, and wherein each of the plurality of band filters is configured to transmit light in respectively different ones of band filter wavelength ranges that are each both of the visible spectrum and narrower than wavelength ranges of each of the plurality of red filters, the plurality of green filters and the plurality of blue filters.
