Sony patents camera sensor design that uses air gaps to improve color accuracy
Sony has been granted a patent for a light detection device used in camera sensors. The design places a layer of air or a low-refractive-index material between the color filters to reduce differences in how the sensor responds to the same color.
In the filing’s own words
Provided is a light detection device capable of reducing an inter-same-color sensitivity difference Provided are: a color filter layer including a plurality of color filters each transmitting light of a predetermined wavelength component contained in light condensed by a microlens; and a low-refractive-index layer that is at least partially arranged between the color filters and contains air or a low-refractive-index material having a lower refractive index than a material of an adjacent layer. Then, the low-refractive-index layer has a first width on the microlens side and a second width, narrower than the first width, on a side closer to a substrate than a portion having the first width.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. A light detection device, comprising: a substrate having a plurality of photoelectric conversion units in a two-dimensional array; a microlens layer on a side close to a light receiving surface of the substrate, wherein the microlens layer includes a plurality of microlenses, and each microlens of the plurality of microlenses is formed to correspond to a photoelectric conversion unit group including at least two adjacent photoelectric conversion units among the plurality of photoelectric conversion units; a color filter layer between the substrate and the microlens layer, wherein the color filter layer includes a plurality of color filters configured to transmit light of a specific wavelength component contained in light condensed by the plurality of microlenses; and a low-refractive-index layer at least partially between color filters of the plurality of color filters, wherein the low-refractive-index layer contains air or a low-refractive-index material having a refractive index lower than a refractive index of a material of an adjacent layer, the low-refractive-index layer has a first width on a side close to the microlens layer and has a second width on a side closer to the substrate than a portion having the first width, the second width of the low-refractive-index layer is narrower than the first width of the low-refractive-index layer, the low-refractive-index layer includes partition layers in two stages that are at least partially arranged between the color filters and are arrayed in a direction perpendicular to the light receiving surface of the substrate, a width of an upper partition layer, which is a partition layer in an upper stage on the side close to the microlens layer, is wider than a width of a lower partition layer, which is a partition layer in a lower stage on a side close to the substrate, the lower partition layer is entirely present between the color filters, and the upper partition layer is entirely present on a side closer to the microlens layer than a light receiving surface of the color filters.
