Samsung patents split-screen video mode using two side-by-side cameras

This patent describes a method for an electronic device with two cameras placed next to each other to record video simultaneously. One camera captures a wide view while the other captures a narrower, zoomed-in view of a specific part of that scene. The device displays these two videos side-by-side on the screen, allowing the user to adjust the zoom level of the second view before saving the combined footage.

Why it mattersThis feature could allow users to create dynamic videos that show both the overall context and a specific detail at the same time without needing to edit clips together later.

In the filing’s own words

A method and an apparatus are provided for processing multimedia information by an electronic device including at least two cameras. The method includes obtaining, via a first camera of the at least two cameras, first video information corresponding to a first focus region; obtaining, via a second camera of the at least two cameras, second video information corresponding to a second focus region within the first focus region, the second focus region being smaller than the first focus region; and displaying, in a split screen layout, the first video information and the second video information on a display of the electronic device.

What exactly they claim (claim 1)

1. A method performed by an electronic device including at least two cameras, the method comprising: obtaining, via a first camera of the at least two cameras, first video information corresponding to a first focus region; obtaining, via a second camera of the at least two cameras, second video information corresponding to a second focus region within the first focus region, the second focus region being smaller than the first focus region wherein the first camera and the second camera are positioned side by side on a same surface of the electronic device; displaying the first video information and the second video information in a split screen on a display of the electronic device, wherein the first video information corresponding to the first focus region is displayed in a first portion of the split screen and the second video information corresponding to the second focus region within the first focus region is displayed in a second portion of the split screen, wherein the second portion is separate from and adjacent to the first portion; receiving, on the split screen in which the first video information and the second video information is displayed, a first input to modify an enlargement factor of the second focus region; displaying, in the split screen, second video information according to the modified enlargement factor of the second focus region while displaying the first video information, wherein the second video information is obtained via the second camera; receiving a second input to store third video information; synthesizing the third video information by combining the first video information and the second video information in the split screen, as a response to the received second input; storing the third video information including the split screen; and playing the third video information including the split screen in response to receiving a third input, wherein the first input includes a drag to adjust the enlargement factor of the second focus region.
