Apple patents method for Siri to pick the right app for a command
Apple has been granted a patent for a system that helps a digital assistant decide what to do when a user gives a command. The system creates a list of possible actions from different apps and the assistant itself, then picks the most likely one to execute.
In the filing’s own words
Systems and processes for operating an intelligent automated assistant are provided. An intelligent automated assistant receives a user input and generates a set of one or more token sequences based on the user input. The set of one or more token sequences are interpreted to generate a plurality of candidate interpretations each including a corresponding action and metadata associated with the action. A top candidate interpretation is selected from the plurality of candidate interpretations, and the corresponding action is performed based on the associated metadata.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An electronic device, comprising: one or more processors; a memory; and one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for: receiving a user input to the electronic device; generating, based at least in part on the user input, a first set of candidate interpretations determined to be operable with one or more software applications of the electronic device and a second set of candidate interpretations determined to be operable with a digital assistant of the electronic device, each candidate interpretation of the first and second sets of candidate interpretations including a respective candidate action; selecting a top candidate interpretation from among the candidate interpretations of the first set of candidate interpretations and the second set of candidate interpretations; and causing the candidate action of the top candidate interpretation to be performed by the one or more software applications of the electronic device or by the digital assistant of the electronic device.
