Sony patents virtual audio that spreads out overlapping voices
Sony describes a system that places multiple speakers in a virtual 3D space based on where you are facing. If voices overlap, the system moves them apart to ensure you can hear each person clearly.
In the filing’s own words
Provided is an information processing device and method that allow the voice of a speaker to be easily recognized. The information processing device includes an information processing unit that generates, on the basis of orientation information indicating an orientation of a listener, virtual location information indicating a location of the listener in a virtual space, the location being set by the listener, and virtual location information of a speaker, a voice of the speaker localized at a location corresponding to the orientation and location of the listener and the location of the speaker.
What exactly they claim (claim 1)
1. An information processing device, comprising: an information processing unit configured to: generate, based on orientation information, first virtual location information, and second virtual location information, voices of a plurality of speakers, wherein a voice, of the generated voices, corresponding to a speaker of the plurality of speakers is localized at a specific location corresponding to an orientation of a listener, a first location of the listener, and a second location of the speaker, the orientation information includes the orientation of the listener, the first virtual location information includes the first location of the listener in a virtual space, the first location is set by the listener, and the second virtual location information includes the second location of each speaker of the plurality of speakers; adjust a third location of at least one first speaker of the plurality of speakers in the virtual space to make an inter-speaker angle greater than or equal to a specific minimum angle, wherein the inter-speaker angle is between a first direction of a first speaker viewed from the listener and a second direction of a second speaker viewed from the listener; calculate a degree of priority of the each speaker of the plurality of speakers based on the generated voices, wherein the degree of priority is calculated subsequent to a failure of the information processing unit to arrange the plurality of speakers in the virtual space with the inter-speaker angle between two adjacent speakers of the plurality of speakers greater than or equal to the specific minimum angle; and adjust, based on the calculated degree of priority, a fourth location of at least one second speaker of the plurality of speakers in the virtual space to make the inter-speaker angle between first priority speakers, of the plurality of speakers, greater than or equal to the specific minimum angle, wherein a priority of each first priority speaker of the first priority speakers is greater than a specific value.
